Tips for Parents: What to Say to Your Child Before School Picture Day

Picture day at school can feel a little stressful—for both kids and adults. Whether it’s the pressure to look perfect or the nerves in front of the camera, it’s completely normal to feel a little on edge. Here are five simple, reassuring things you can say to your child (and maybe remind yourself of, too) the next time a photo day rolls around …

1. Embrace the Awkwardness
Remind your child that having their picture taken can feel awkward for EVERYONE. It’s totally okay to feel a little embarrassed, just like how you might feel nervous before giving a speech. It’s natural! Everyone gets nervous about pictures, but once it’s their turn, it’ll be over before they know it.
2. Try Giggling
When it’s time to smile, try giggling a little! This will help your child look more natural and relaxed in the picture. A giggle makes the smile feel more real and fun!
3. Give Yourself a Pep Talk
Before it’s their turn, encourage your child to give themselves a little pep talk! They can say something like, “I look great, I’ve got this!” Positive self-talk can make a big difference!
4. Be Yourself and Have Fun
Tell your child that the most important thing is to just be themselves. School pictures are a great way to remember how they looked and felt at this age, so they should smile and enjoy the moment.
5. Focus on the Positives
Afterward, no matter how the picture turns out, focus on the good parts. Compliment them on how they look or how their personality shines through. “Wow, you look great! I love how unique and special this picture is. It really captures you and I love you!”
