Spring break is the perfect time to slow down, soak up some sunshine, and make sweet memories with your little ones. If you’re in or around Philadelphia and looking for creative, budget-friendly ideas to keep your elementary-aged kids engaged, I’ve got some ideas! From outdoor adventures to artsy afternoons, here are five fun things to do this spring break:
1. Visit the Library
Don’t underestimate the magic of your local library. Philadelphia has some beautiful branches—like the Parkway Central Library with its cozy children’s section and regular storytime events. Let your kids pick out a few spring-themed books or participate in a reading challenge. Many libraries even offer free arts & crafts or STEM activities during school breaks. It’s a calm way to start the day—and it’s free!
2. Go for a Hike in the Wissahickon
Spring is the time to explore the outdoors, and the Wissahickon Valley Park is one of Philly’s most beautiful natural spots. Pack a picnic and check out some favorites like Valley Green Inn, Devil’s Pool and my ultimate favorite – The Andorra Meadow (park here). The trails are kid-friendly, and the scenery is stunning this time of year—think blooming trees, birdsong, and maybe even a muddy puddle or two to splash in!
3. Write a Spring Poem and Bring Flowers to Your Neighbor
Combine creativity with kindness! Sit down together and write a simple spring poem—something fun and silly, or sweet and rhyming. Then pick (or purchase) a small bouquet of flowers and deliver both to a neighbor. It’s a great way to sneak in a mini poetry lesson while also practicing empathy and community spirit. You can even try this Back-and-Forth Drawing Game to decorate the poem with colorful drawings!
4. Explore Ringing Rocks Park in Upper Black Eddy, PA
This one’s a bit of a drive (about an hour north of the city), but it’s absolutely worth it. Pack a hammer and head to Ringing Rocks Park, where kids can bang on giant boulders that actually ring like bells. After some musical rock play, hike the short trail to see Bucks County’s largest waterfall. It’s a mini-adventure that feels like a hidden gem, and it’s guaranteed to wow curious kids of all ages!
5. Get Crafty at Color Me Mine
Head to Color Me Mine (here’s a link to locations) for some hands-on creativity. Kids can paint their own pottery—mugs, figurines, plates, and more—and the studio will glaze and fire it for you. It’s a great rainy day option and gives your child a keepsake to remember their spring break fun. Walk-ins are usually welcome, but reservations are a good idea during busy weeks.
Spring break doesn’t have to be a major production. With a little curiosity and creativity, you can turn simple outings into meaningful experiences. Whether you’re painting pottery or hiking a new trail, the most important part is spending time together—and soaking in the joy of spring in Philadelphia!
While you’re home and visiting with family, it’s also a great time to schedule extended family portraits! Check out an example of low-key family portraits with everyone in the frame and reach out to Regina to capture images of the whole crew while everyone’s off and in town!
